My career started out like a lot of web developers – with a long three years at university studying outdated web development techniques. Once I’d got that out of the way, I started my first agency job and quickly learnt more than I had in my entire time at uni.

I’ve now been working in web development for 8 years and have seen a lot change over that time. The constant evolution in the industry is what keeps the job interesting and means no two weeks are the same.

It’s also why I’ve found myself moving away from exclusively writing front end code. Gone are the days where development was purely about writing lean code and giving the user something “pretty” to look at. These days web development is about much more than how a website looks and performs under stress. Learning to develop websites that perform from a Search perspective (be that traditional search engines or LLMs), while maintaining a good / visually appealing experience for the user has been a new and fun challenge.

Finding that balance between how a site looks and how it performs can be tricky, and while we have plenty of experience doing so (just look at our case studies), sometimes it’s a welcome change to be asked to focus on one more than the other. One of my favourite websites we’ve built recently was for the award winning, multi location restaurant, My Lahore. It’s a perfect example of a website that doesn’t sacrifice the core principles of Search, but certainly gives users a unique and stimulating experience.
