AI content isn’t automatically bad for SEO, but low-quality, mass-produced “AI slop” can absolutely cause problems. Google doesn’t penalise based on whether AI is used, but whether your content is useful, original, and trustworthy enough to stand out in an increasingly saturated search landscape.

SEO isn’t just about driving traffic anymore; it’s about attracting the right kind of visitors and converting them into high-quality leads. In these high-trust, high-consideration journeys, credibility is everything. If your content feels generic or unreliable, you’re not just risking lower rankings – you’re undermining the trust that actually drives conversions.

You have probably heard this phrase a lot recently.
“AI slop” is slang for low-quality, mass-produced digital content created using generative AI with very little thought, effort, or human input. It can include text, images, videos, and even fake news stories that flood social media feeds and websites. It’s usually designed to grab attention quickly, chase clicks, or fill space – rather than genuinely provide help or value to anyone. You even see it on professional platforms like LinkedIn, where people are using AI to write posts and then use AI again to generate replies to the comments – so essentially it becomes a platform where a load of bots are conversing with each other.

Essentially, it is low-value content pushed out at scale, prioritising speed and cost savings over quality, resulting in generic, formulaic, or inaccurate marketing material that often fills social feeds and websites. Ultimately, it damages brand reputation and erodes consumer trust.
The conversation around AI content hasn’t appeared out of nowhere. Organic search has changed quickly, and 2026 looks very different from even a year or two ago.
We’re seeing an explosion of AI-generated content across almost every industry. Blogs, landing pages, social posts, product descriptions. Everyone is publishing more and faster.
The result? Content saturation.
There’s simply more content competing for attention, which makes it much harder for generic information to stand out or rank well. If your blog says the same thing as ten others on page one, you’ve got a problem.
At the same time, AI search tools are changing how people discover information. Instead of clicking through multiple websites, users are increasingly getting summarised answers directly in search experiences. While blogs are still important, they’re driving less traffic than they used to. AI-synthesised answers can resolve many informational queries without a click, meaning fewer users are reaching your site at the research stage.
So the challenge in 2026 isn’t just creating content. It’s creating content that is original enough to stand out, timely enough to keep up, useful enough to earn trust, and strong enough to be chosen over everything else saying the same thing.
That’s why we’re seeing a shift towards a different type of content – the kind AI can’t easily generate on its own. The best results come from content that’s grounded in your real experience, makes use of proprietary data (don’t worry about having a huge dataset, you can make this work with a few client surveys!), strong opinions and first-hand experience. This gives you something defensible. It positions your brand as the source that AI wants to reference or cite, rather than regurgitate.
Similarly, as informational queries generate less traffic, there’s less value in top-of-funnel content that spits out what already exists. That discovery happens elsewhere. We’re not saying it’s entirely redundant, but the bigger opportunity sits further down the funnel. Commercial and decision-stage content – the pages that clearly position your offering – are becoming far more valuable. By the time someone lands on your site, they’ve often already done their research. Your job isn’t just to inform them, but to convince them.

According to Google’s official search guidance, AI content does not inherently hurt SEO, nor is it automatically penalised. Google’s stance focuses on the quality, usefulness, and originality of the content, not whether it was written by a person, AI, or a mix of both. So if content is helpful, original, accurate, and genuinely useful to readers, it can perform well in search. But we can’t stress this one thing enough: add something new to the conversation!
Where AI content becomes a problem is when it’s used to create low-quality, unhelpful, or spammy pages designed purely to manipulate rankings, which has actually always been a problem, it is just AI makes it easier to do at scale.
Google has confirmed that it rewards high-quality content, “however it is produced”. The key to success is aligning AI usage with their E-E-A-T framework (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness).
This is where AI can struggle, as it cannot provide genuine, firsthand experience. It’s never worked in your type of business, it just pretends it has! That means content which merely rehashes what data already exists online – without human insight or practical expertise – can feel thin very quickly and will likely be deemed low quality.
AI can hallucinate (fabricate facts but state them with confidence). That could mean fake statistics, misquoted sources, outdated advice, or facts that are simply wrong, which undermines the crucial “Trust” component of E-E-A-T. It can also create bigger problems, such as: wrong product information can confuse customers, misleading advice can harm credibility, fake sources make your brand look careless. Or even worse, errors in finance, health, or legal content which can have serious repercussions.
This becomes even more important under Google’s Your Money or Your Life (YMYL) framework. These are topics where poor advice could negatively impact someone’s health, finances, safety, or future, such as medical, legal, or financial guidance. For example, if someone searches “how to cure heart disease,” inaccurate content could cause real harm. Because of that, Google applies much stricter quality thresholds. It doesn’t just assess keywords, it looks at who created the content and what qualifies them to give that advice.
In higher-risk or regulated sectors, strong trust signals matter far more. Google is more likely to value content supported by clear expertise (such as author profiles with qualifications), real-world experience, recognised credentials, reviews, case studies, and credible external citations. The stronger these signals are, the easier it is for both users and search engines to see your brand as trustworthy.

The primary purpose of content must be to serve users (“people-first”), not to rank in search engines (“search engine-first”). Google wants content created to genuinely help users, answer real questions, and provide clear value. If content is produced purely to target keywords, drive clicks, or manipulate rankings, it’s far less likely to be seen as high quality.

AI can be incredibly useful – the point isn’t to avoid it, it’s to avoid relying on it blindly. Used well, it speeds things up. Used badly, it just creates more noise that people want to ignore.

Don’t publish AI drafts as they are. Layer in real experience, case studies, opinions, and practical insights. Also, have in-depth author pages to show Google that the writer is qualified to speak on this topic. This is what makes content feel unique instead of generic.
AI is great for structure, but not depth. Push it further – add examples, nuance, and detail that actually help someone understand or apply the topic.
If your content could belong to any company, it’s too generic. Make sure it reflects your perspective, your positioning, and your point of view.
First drafts are just that, drafts. Refine wording, remove repetition, simplify ideas, and make sure it actually sounds human.
Use AI for speed, but not for originality. Bring in your own data, learnings, opinions, or industry insights to make the content genuinely useful.
