Most legal teams are still bogged down in low-value, process-heavy work; admin, document handling, and pulling information together. Necessary? Absolutely. Billable? Not always.

But remember: the key word here is supporting. AI can provide structure but it doesn’t have expertise, judgement, or brand voice. That’s where your human insight comes in. You need to:

  • Highlight nuances clients and search engines value
  • Ensure content is accurate, compliant, and reflects your firm’s voice

‼️Warning: AI should not be used for…

AI is useful, fast, and can sound convincing. But it is not:

  • A solicitor
  • A decision-maker
  • Something you should blindly trust

Its content is not gospel, and treating it as such is where risk creeps in.

So don’t:

  • Treat AI outputs as final legal advice
  • Send unreviewed AI-generated content to clients
  • Present AI-generated material in court
  • Assume something is correct just because it sounds confident

While it may seem like obvious advice, it’s easy to believe that this “artificial intelligence” is smart enough to know what’s right or wrong. But the truth is, AI isn’t actually “intelligent” at all. AI doesn’t understand the consequences. It doesn’t carry responsibility. It doesn’t know when it’s wrong. Which means you still need to.

Client confidentiality doesn’t disappear because the tool is convenient. You’re still accountable.

The risks (and why they matter)

AI risks aren’t theoretical, they’re already happening.
And from a search-first perspective, there’s an additional layer: poor AI output doesn’t just create legal risk, it can undermine digital authority, damage credibility, and negatively affect visibility.

Inaccuracy, bias, and ethical responsibility

AI produces answers that are polished, confident and well-written, even when they’re completely wrong. This is known as an ‘AI hallucination’ – when a system generates false, misleading, or fabricated information that appears credible. These “hallucinations” can include:

  • Made-up case law
  • Outdated legal positions
  • Oversimplified or biased interpretations

Dangerous, not because they’re obviously flawed, but because they’re easy to trust. And in a world where clients search, compare, and validate firms online, credibility is everything. One mistake on your website or social channels can signal unreliability to both clients and search engines.

Professional obligations still apply. AI doesn’t remove them. Firms need to ensure AI use aligns with the standards set by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, including:

  • Acting with integrity
  • Maintaining client confidentiality
  • Providing competent, accurate advice

Using AI without proper oversight risks falling short of those expectations, even unintentionally.

From a search perspective, misaligned AI use can affect both credibility and discoverability. Google and other platforms reward trustworthy, authoritative content , sloppy AI work undermines that.
Search engines like Google take this especially seriously for content classified under Your Money or Your Life (YMYL) topics that could impact a person’s finances, health, or safety. These pages are held to much stricter quality and accuracy standards, meaning incorrect or misleading information can negatively affect your rankings and visibility.

Confidentiality

Not all AI tools are built with legal security in mind. If you input sensitive client information into the wrong system, you risk:

  • Exposing confidential data
  • Breaching client trust
  • Creating regulatory issues

But AI platforms can store, process, or learn from the data you input, which means you need to treat them with the same caution as any external third party.

Accountability

If AI gets something wrong, it doesn’t take responsibility. There’s no liability, no professional obligation and no consequences for the tool itself. You, however, still carry all of that. Solicitors are accountable for:

  • The accuracy of their advice
  • The information they provide
  • The outcomes of their work

AI adds another layer that must be checked and controlled, especially for content that appears in search, social, or local listings. It’s not just about protecting your own business from potential legal issues if inaccurate information is published; it’s also about your responsibility to clients. In many professional fields, the information you share can directly influence important decisions, and getting it wrong could leave someone worse off. That level of trust carries real weight, and misuse – intentional or not – can have serious consequences both for your clients and for you.

Unequal reliability

Not all AI tools are created equal:

  • Paid, enterprise-level tools = better reliability, security, and performance
  • Free tools = higher risk, less control

If you’re not paying for the product, there’s a good chance you are the product. Choosing the wrong tool isn’t just a tech decision, it’s a risk decision.

It’s not about avoiding AI, and it’s definitely not about handing everything over to it but IT IS about control. Use AI like you would a junior team member, with oversight, boundaries, and responsibility.
